Meet Katie Berkedal

Katie Berkedal was born and raised in La Crosse, and attended State Road Elementary, Lincoln Middle, and Central High schools. After high school, she spent four years living near Seattle, five months in Trinidad and Tobago, and two years teaching English in southern Japan. She returned to her hometown to raise a family with her partner Sam Servais, an art teacher at Onalaska High School. She has a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Social Justice and Communication and after exploring several career paths has landed on her dream job: program director at La Crosse Community Foundation. Katie and Sam have two children who are in 6th and 8th grades at Longfellow Middle School. The Berkedal Servais family also has a dog, Arthur, and a cat, Lena.

Candidate Statement

Katie is running for school board because she cares deeply about equity in education and helping students navigate through the many challenges facing this, and future, generations. Coming from a family of educators, she’s aware of the concerns shared by many teachers and school staff and is eager to listen and help craft sustainable solutions. Katie is a problem-solver, a natural leader, an open listener, and is skilled in navigating difficult conversations. She looks forward to serving the school district that helped shape who she is today and provided her with many impactful opportunities for personal and academic growth.
